Biblical Beauty in the ‘Art of Revelation’
Art of Revelation: A Visual Encounter with the Jewish Bible Paintings by Yoram Raanan. Commentary by Meira Raanan (Raanan Art Ltd, 237 pp. $120)
During the many years Israeli artist Yoram Raanan spent creating visual midrash on the weekly Torah parsha, his wife, Meira Raanan, was writing a complementary commentary on his work. Two years ago, his studio and canvases were destroyed in a wave of arson that swept the Judean Hills. The 160 bold works of abstract expressionism in Art of Revelation are extant today because they were digitally scanned before the fire. These magical, enveloping images in red, blue and yellow depict Torah stories from the creation of Adam and Eve (right) to the last days of Moses. You might want to begin the new cycle of Torah readings that begins on Simchat Torah with this treasure by your side.
