SPONSORED CONTENT: The Art and Science of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs
When an Event is More than an Event
Jewish milestone celebrations are not just single-day events. They are beautiful additions to a family’s legacy. The memories give us joy and comfort for years beyond the day itself, we decorate our homes with photos from the event so we can appreciate them on a daily basis, and the stories get passed down from generation to generation.
As an event planner who specializes in Jewish milestone celebrations, I see each occasion as a sacred opportunity to create lifelong memories. The meaning of these memories never gets old: even after planning events for 13 years, 340 events and counting, I still tear up watching the couple under the Chuppah or hearing a Bar Mitzvah boy’s D’var Torah. I just celebrated my “triple Bat Mitzvah,” and am grateful for the memories I have of my own Bat Mitzvah – those memories are just as special to me now as they were 24 years ago.
Like life itself, the opportunity to mark the moment in the moment, with the people who are around today, is fleeting. I take my job as your event planner seriously and treat it with the utmost gravity and care.
Why Both Art and Science Matter to Your Event
To turn the moments of your event into memories, I approach your special day with a blend of art and science. The “art” is the meaning that matters to you and your family, the personal touches that distinguish your event from someone else’s, and the unforgettable experiences that become codified as precious memories. The “science” is the checklist, the logistics, and behind-the-scenes operations. When the science is managed flawlessly, you, your family and your guests can be fully present at the event and enjoy every minute of the time you are sharing together.
Knowing how important both meaning and management are, I make sure your day has the perfect blend of both. For example, no matter how much there is to do on the day of your event (science), I make sure that every photo on your shotlist is taken (art).
A Personal Note To You if You’re Considering Hosting a Bar or Bat Mitzvah
Weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays cross cultures, but mitzvahs are unique, significant milestones for Jewish families. I know the importance of this celebration at every level: for your child or grandchild, his/her friends, your own extended family and friends, and of course, you. I also understand that because of this importance, you may at first feel overwhelmed by the planning process and unsure if you can manage such a big undertaking. You may wonder how to host a religious milestone event when not everyone identifies strongly with the religious aspects of the celebration.
This is where I come in. I do more than pick venues and vendors. I act as a trusted partner by your side so you can feel relaxed and confident about the event you’re planning. I meet you where you are, and work with you to create a celebration that will fit your budget and planning schedule while still honoring the meaning of the occasion.
How I Plan Your Bar or Bat Mitzvah With Both Art and Science
To begin the planning process, I start with a simple but significant question: why are you throwing this celebration? The answer to this question speaks volumes and gives me deep insight into ways to incorporate elements that are both meaningful and personal to you. I then talk with you about the rest of your family, your shared values, causes that may be near and dear to you, unique family traditions, and so on. And of course, we talk about the child or grandchild being honored. What are their interests and hobbies? Do they have their own vision of how they want the day to go? With the number of mitzvahs I’ve planned, I’ve learned how to balance the child’s vision with his or her family’s vision, so everyone feels included and heard.
Once we’ve finalized the “art” and personal touches important to your mitzvah, I take care of the science. I build and manage the timeline of the day, book trusted vendors that are the best fit for your specific vision, and make sure that they are coordinated across the timeline. I work with you to determine the right-size guest list for your budget and the feeling you want to have on that day (cozy and intimate or big and expansive?). I understand that even with an event planner, hosting an event can feel like a lot, so I take care of all of the event checklists and details — keeping you informed and involved as much or as little as you wish — always holding each task up to the highest standard of quality.
For the mitzvah itself, we talk about the art and science of tying the service element to the party, and whether it will be on different days and different places, or happen on the same day at the same place, for example. I make sure to include age-appropriate activities that reflect the boy or girl’s personality and hobbies with your family’s values and interests.
Whether it’s a task or a tradition, I weave in meaning that is most important to your family, so you have the lifetime memories from the mitzvah. I know I’ve done my job when I hear feedback like the note I received from my client Tatyana, whom I partnered with to plan a Bar Mitzvah for her son: “Chantelle combines the professionalism and attention to detail of a top corporate planner with the warmth and empathy you want for such a meaningful family occasion. The end result was an event that exceeded our expectations in every way.”
Marking Moments
A meaningful event for your family is built on a foundation of your family’s traditions and includes intentional elements that are unique to you and the mitzvah milestone. Meaningful events are also seamlessly executed so you can soak up all the moments of the day free from worry or stress.
Since we are building memories for your family, I pay special attention to opportunities to transform moments into memories. For example, people tend to remember the beginning and ending of events more than the middle. Including a unique and personal element at the start and providing a memorable send-off to guests is one way to capture the natural memory markers in your guests’ minds, and keep the celebration alive long past the day itself.
Building a Legacy
Events are opportunities to celebrate in the moment, commemorate important milestones, and create a lifelong memory bank for yourself, your loved ones, and your guests.
If you are looking ahead to important events in your life, including weddings and engagement parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, brit milahs, sheva b’rachot, graduations, anniversaries, or birthdays, consider the benefits of having an event planner by your side.
I approach each event with focus on both art and science – incorporating authentic ways to make memories and meticulous attention to detail while honoring my clients’ values and visions. I would love to hear about your next celebration! Visit my website, eventstolife.com, to learn more.
